Task Assignment

While disparagingly called "scripting", the topic of assigning users to a task in a usability test or more elegantly, providing a scenario, was a hot topic at UPA this year.  The issue is partially of trading control for the value of user's natural intentions. Might users be more motivated and more realistically engaged if the goal is really their own, as in sampling approaches on the web?
