The current study examined the readability of GUI's using four levels of textured backgrounds (plain, small, medium, large), two levels of saturation (dark, light), and three colours (blue, grey, yellow). Participants (N=34) found target words ("square", "circle", "triangle") embedded in the text excerpts (black text) that were placed on top of the textured backgrounds. In general, the plain backgrounds led to faster search times than did the medium-textured backgrounds, and the blue ...

Finding Information on the Web: Does the Amount of  Whitespace Really Matter?   That is, in his book, Web Site Usability: A Designer’s Guide (Spool, et at. 1997), Spool stated that he and his associates found that websites with more whitespace "fared worse in terms of users’ success in finding information" than more dense layouts (Spool, et al.

Many individuals who work at a computer experience eye-related discomfort and/or visual problems. However, the unique characteristics and high visual demands of computer work make many individuals susceptible to the development of eye and vision-related symptoms. Uncorrected vision conditions, poor computer design and workplace ergonomics and a highly demanding visual task can all contribute to the development of visual symptoms and complaints.

Studies have found that manual scrolling tends to produce poorer comprehension and reading efficiency than automatic presentation methods for SSI (Chen & Chan, 1990). With automatic presentation of text, manual scrolling is not necessary and the reader views the text at pre-set speeds. The order of presentation of the text passages, the text presentation formats, and the text presentation speeds were counterbalanced across subjects.

Article:goanna.cs.rmit.edu.au/~gl/research/HCC/interact97.html
The graphical user interface (GUI) is now firmly established as the preferred user interface for end users in most situations. We believe that 3D GUIs -- graphical user interfaces which utilise 3D graphics -- offer significant potential for improvement over today's 2D GUIs, and furthermore, that it is now, or very shortly will be, possible to run such interfaces on personal computers. In this paper, we discuss elements of a prototype 3D GUI we are developing and discuss some early feedback ...

Roxane is an original typeface designed by the author in response to a design analysis of visual attributes that enhance the legibility of font characteristics. Visual analysis of type form attributes and visual principles provide the framework for this more holistic enterprise. In the capital letters (see figure 15), much greater variety can be seen between the letters, than in the shapes inside the letters in both size and shape.

Reading strategy Microsoft NoMetaDescription The effects of reading speed and line length on comprehension [completed] Research officer: Mark Haselgrove Funded by: Microsoft Corporation A 6-month project investigated the effect of reading rate and line length on different types of recall and comprehension of texts read on screen. The results confirmed that short line lengths (25 characters per line) are read slower than longer line lengths, reading either at a normal or fast reading rate.

XLibris is a prototype interface for reading developed at FX Palo Alto Laboratory to explore the question "can computers help us read? To explore the premise that computation can enhance active reading we have built the XLibris "active reading machine. To go beyond paper, XLibris monitors the free-form ink annotations made while reading, and uses these to organize and to search for information.
