User Interface Design for Programmers 7 Posted by Joel Spolsky, 4/27/00 at 1:45:55 AM. When the Macintosh was new, Bruce "Tog" Tognazzini wrote a column in Apple's developer magazine on UI. After all, positioning a window 2 pixels from the top of the screen is "equally likely" as positioning a window exactly at the top of the screen.

Existing design principles are based on our own experiences in user interface design, on the design experiences of others, and on insights from linguistics and psychology. The most recent influence on these principles has come from our design experience in creating an object-oriented user interface (OOUI). Our goal for user interface design is to have the interface positively support users' endeavors and never intrude adversely.

Graphics Interface is the Canadian annual conference devoted to computer graphics and interactive techniques. It is the oldest regularly-scheduled computer graphics and human-computer interaction conference; the first conference was held in 1969. Graphics Interface and Vision Interface are held annually as joint conferences on computer graphics, human-computer interaction, vision and image processing.

The former are assessed by measuring the inter-page conceptual relevance and the latter by measuring the inter-page access co-occurrence. The discovery of pages that are conceptually related but rarely co-occur in visits suggests areas where Web site design improvement would be appropriate. Further, the technique suggests how to apply quantitative data obtained through a multiple regression analysis that predicts hyperlink traversal frequency from page layout features.

Graphical user interfaces (GUIs) have become the user interface of choice. GUI designers' predilection for control is evident in applications that continually attempt to control user navigation by graying and blackening menu items or controls within an application. The Dispatch button invokes a modal dialog box instead of a modeless child window.

User Interface Design for Programmers 3 Posted by Joel Spolsky, 4/12/00 at 9:59:49 PM. Chapter 3: Choices When you go into a restaurant and you see a sign that says "No Dogs Allowed," you might think that sign is purely proscriptive: Mr. Restaurant doesn't like dogs around, so when he built the restaurant he put up that sign. Pull up the Tools Options dialog box and you will see a history of arguments that the software designers had about the design of the product.

Forced delays in finding Web information, on the other hand, merely give users another reason to click away to some other site. Cascading menus - also called hierarchical menus - show you a new second or even third menu when you click on the first menu item. The best-known cascading menu lives underneath the Windows Start button.
